Ryanair has cancelled 15 flights to and from Italy’s Bergamo airport after a cargo flight overshot the runway in the early hours, forcing its closure.

Three crew members escaped unhurt when an ASL cargo aircraft arriving from Paris overshot the runway and pierced the barriers of a ring road, narrowing missing a passing motorist.

Ryanair refers to Bergamo as Milan and it is one of the airline’s major Italian airports.

The runway has since re-opened, but Ryanair is expected to feel the knock-on effects for the remainder of the day.

An early flight from Stansted was one of the departures affected.
