A number of protesters occupied the London City Airport‘s runway disrupting all flights.

It has been reported that the protesters bypassed security by using a rubber dinghy to cross the docks. Responsibility for the protest via a series of tweets has been claimed by the Black Lives Matter UK movement.

The protesters tweeted: “Activists in support of BLMUK #Shutdown London City Airport to protest the UK’s environmental impact on black people.”

The group of protesters were seen huddled together on the runway, causing all flights due to land at the airport to be diverted to Gatwick and Southend airports. Outgoing flights are currently being delayed.

A London City Airport spokesperson said that the runway is currently closed and apologized for all the inconvenience caused to passengers.

A number of outbound flights from the airport have been cancelled this morning, while passengers are being told to wait for further information.
