Reading Time: < 1 minuteDutch police are training eagles to grab illegal drones out of the sky.
In the video, an eagle is seen swooping towards a hovering drone, grabbing hold of the machine with its talons and flying off. It’s just one of a number of ideas being tested by the Dutch National Police. The force says it’s trying to counter the increasing use of drones by the public.
Police worked with the company Guard From Above to train the eagles. The expert hunters are taught to treat the drones as if they were a potential meal.
“The bird sees the drone as prey and takes it to a safe area, a place where he does not suffer from other birds or humans,” says a statement from the police.
Drones are becoming increasingly common and there have been a number of near-misses involving planes. A report last month also warned they could be used by terrorists.
Obviously there’s the chance that an eagle could get hurt by the blades on a drone. That’s why the police are apparently looking into some sort of protective clothing for the birds.
