An Air France Boeing 777 enroute from Mauritius to Paris Dec.20 diverted to Kenya after a fake bomb was discovered in one of the lavatories.

According to a New York Times report, the fake device was made of cardboard, sheets of paper and a timer; nothing that would have triggered an alert during airport screening.

The aircraft, flight 463, diverted to Mombasa, the nearest available airport, where it made an emergency landing and passengers evacuated using the emergency slides. There are no reports of any injuries.

Air France CEO, Frederic Gagey later held a press conference in Paris, confirming the fake device had been discovered and that it presented no danger to the aircraft or those onboard. He praised the crew for their cool-headed, professional response to the situation.

The incident is being investigated.
