Reading Time: < 1 minuteThe European Union has taken a bold step to help airlines and mitigate the damage to the airlines created by the coronavirus. The EU has suspended the 80/20 airport slot use rule until the end of the summer season.
This move secures airlines with full flexibility in arranging their schedules and allows them to avoid operating ‘ghost flights‘ which are costly, especially considering the current grave financial situation.
“It gives airlines and airports the certainty that the routes and network they have invested in will be valid next summer, protecting vital connectivity and preparing the way for recovery”, said IATA in a statement.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA), therefore, encourages the remaining regulators, that are still doubting over the decision, to follow the EU example and support the industry battling with this terrible crisis.
