FedEx Express has put its first containerized crew rest developed for its Boeing 767-300ERs into service, the company said.

The first unit is flying on the carrier’s route connecting its Memphis hub and Brazil’s Viracopos International Airport, said Leo Warmuth, the carrier’s managing director–aircraft engineering and technical planning.

Each container can accommodate two crewmembers and an “umbilical cord” provides power and air conditioning.

Without the crew rests, schedules for FedEx pilots on certain long-haul flights must include additional duty-free time–or “enhanced sleep opportunities”–for rest.

FedEx is equipping 25 of its 767s with the containers.
