The CFM International LEAP-1B engine, which powers Boeing’s new 737MAX family of aircraft, has been awarded certification for operations in Russia.

The milestone, which approves the certification of Boeing’s family of the re-engined narrow-body in Russia, is expected shortly and will pave the way for the upcoming first deliveries to Russian operators.

The launch customer of the Boeing 737MAX-8 in Russia is S7 Airlines (Sibir and Globus airlines), which hopes to take delivery of its first aircraft before the end of this year.

The Siberian carrier was the first in Russia to have signed a contract for nine of the type in 2016, with first deliveries originally scheduled for September 2018.

Three other airlines – Utair, Ural Airlines and the country’s sole low-cost carrier Pobeda Airlines (part of Aeroflot Group) – are all confirmed customers for the type. Several others, such as Izhavia, have also voiced an interest in the re-engined narrow-body.
