Reading Time: < 1 minuteMunich Airport’s dynamic growth has continued into the first quarter of 2017: both passenger traffic and the number of take-offs and landings were up over 5 percent as compared with the same quarter a year earlier.
The airport handled 9.4 million passengers – more than ever before in the first quarter of a calendar year. The number of aircraft movements increased to around 93,000. In the cargo segment, the total airfreight turnover in the first three months of the year was over 85,000 tons – a year-on-year increase of approximately 8 percent.
The first-quarter increase in total passengers at the Bavarian hub mainly reflected growth in continental traffic. In the first three months of the year, European flights accounted for around 5.5 million passengers, or a year-on-year gain of 7 percent. Particularly popular were connections to destinations in the western Mediterranean region, the UK and Eastern Europe.
More than 1.6 million passengers were counted in the intercontinental segment – a gain of about 2 percent. On routes to the USA and Canada, passenger numbers increased by 7 percent, and the total travelling to and from destinations in the Near and Far East was up by a hefty 8 percent. The domestic segment accounted for 2.3 million passengers – a year-on-year increase of nearly 5 percent.
